Our task in Part II of this book is to present a systematic account both of these presumption determining questions and these principles. However, there are some significant philosophical issues we must deal with first. We turn to those issues in the next two chapters. That should make it likely that X’s are Y’s. 7 Our assessment of whether a claim is true, dubious, or false seems to proceed without the determination of probability values. Indeed, one could ask what Grennan’s probability ascriptions actually mean. Because we are examining the claim that a statement is acceptable just in case it is probable, the sense of probability here is monadic rather than binary. We are not talking about a statement’s being probable relative to a set of premises. Rather, we are talking about a statement’s being probable simpliciter.
