For a well-balanced assessment of the obstacles to using the Germania as a historical source – particularly Tacitus’ mixing of Germanic and nonGermanic groups, the influence of possibly dated sources, and the preconceptions of an established Greco-Roman ethnographic tradition – see Rives 1999: 56–66.

The manuscript was damaged in the Cottonian fire of 1731, and the two transcripts made in 1789 (facsimiles ed. Malone 1951 and Kiernan 2011) are of importance because apparently more was visible in the damaged portions then than now. The contents of the entire manuscript, including the prose texts, are edited and translated in Fulk 2010a. Except for some of the quasi-metrical passages mentioned in n. 35, this body of shorter verse is reproduced in facsimile from all known manuscripts by Robinson and Stanley (1991).
